Hot Deal: Sony S639 (16gb) for £99/€127
November 13, 2008
Sony have really impressed us over the last year, ditching sonicstage and embracing mtp/msc really has proven to increase their standing in the DAP world, in my opinion they currently make the best mainstream flash DAP on the market, the one on offer for an incredible €127. Don’t get me wrong, as I company I quite dislike Sony, but I must give credit where it’s due, and Sony have earned that.
The S639 is a neat, slim little number. It offers the same excellent sound quality we’ve come to expect from the Sony brand and while 16gb may not be everyone’s piece of pie I’d imagine it’d be difficult not to think twice when it costs so little, definitely a good price for these testing times huh
If you need a DAP that’s mainly for music on the move, this would be the one to go for, and with any luck perhaps Sony will take some inspiration from their XPERIA X1 and make a bitchin multimedia PMP…one can hope.

This new AM/FM DAP looks really really Old
November 10, 2008
One feature I’ve always wanted on my DAP was an AM radio. Sure most of the airwaves are filled with crap, but it’d be worth it for the sports and news stations. Sadly because of the size of AM antennas and the potential interference it’d cause, it wouldn’t be worth it to manufacturers. The only example I can recall came from a company called PoGo!, but I just tried to access their site and it appears they’re no longer in business.
So who will take over the highly demanding DAP w/ AM tuner market? A company called “C. Crane” apparently. They’ve just released a player called the “Witness” which really has the vintage DAP look down. There’s the clunky body, the super small monochromatic screen, the minuscule 2GB’s of memory, and lots and lots of buttons. Don’t you feel nostalgic just looking at it? Cnet was brave enough to review this…thing and they gave it 3 stars. They liked the players’ ability to schedule recordings, but weren’t too pleased with its $229 price tag:
The good: The C. Crane Witness AM/FM MP3 Player has both AM and FM tuners built in and the ability to schedule recordings from either band. It also offers mic and line-in recording and includes an SD-card expansion slot. It’s easy to use and has a sturdy feel.
The bad: The C. Crane Witness is pricey and only comes with 2GB of internal memory. The screen is small and monochrome, and there’s no ID3-tag sorting for MP3s or playlist support. MP3 playback is more complicated than it needs to be.
The bottom line: The C. Crane Witness AM/FM MP3 player is expensive, has some questionable interface issues, and doesn’t have a lot of the bells and whistles of most modern MP3 players, but if you must have an AM tuner and the ability to schedule radio recordings, this is the device for you.
Score: 6.0/10 (or 3 Stars)
I think I’ll just stick to my $1.99 portable AM radio, thanks.

Cowon O2 Now Available in North America
October 25, 2008
Rejoice my American cousins, Cowon have not forgotten you, now you can pick yourself up a Cowon O2 direct from Cowon’s own Jetmall store. Yesterday we had reports of the Cowon O2 showing up on amazon, however those O2’s are all out of stock.

Jetmall on the other hand have the black 16gb model available for $249.99 and the white 32gb model available for $299.99. This is the first time Cowon have released a high quality item at an initially competitive price, and how competitive it is!
There are only three other 32gb flash players available, the Creative Zen Xfi ($279.99), the Apple iPod Touch ($399.99), and the Sandisk Sansa View ($249.99) although the latter make their own flash memory thus can undercut most of the competition.

Rare Gold Zune under the hammer on Ebay
October 24, 2008
While our very own ssjmichael wrestles with the decision regarding what colour iPod Nano he should buy Zune lovers struggle to choose what “Originals” art they should choose, however throw in the chance to get a super rare Zune and that decision could get a whole lot trickier.
On ebay for the next 17 hours you can have a chance at bidding on a used Gold “GOODS” Zune80. Only ten of these were ever made, and ten 8gb models as well, so it is a pretty exclusive model. Whether you particularly want a branded limited edition Zune is absolutely down to you, but the Zune80 is one of the better DAPs on the market.
At this moment in time no bids have been made, the starting price is $300 but we’ll be sure to keep an eye on it and see what it sells for. Click the link to check out the auction for yourself:
