Indie Nation #28: Photopia
August 15, 2008

Where Indie Nation is concerned, I usually make a quick plug for the game before the jump, then halfheartedly tell you to download the game first and maybe hit the jump later to hear my disjointed, irrelevant thoughts on it.
I’m not going to do that this time, because Photopia is too damn good, and too damn important, to be spoiled by my ramblings. My thoughts on the game can still be found after the jump, but I must insist: do not hit the jump until you have played through the entire game.
Photopia is potentially the greatest piece of interactive fiction I’ve ever played, and don’t let the text adventure format turn you off; it’s necessary to the game’s story and emotional impact and besides that, it’s nowhere near as cryptically difficult and puzzle-filled as Zork or even Gun Mute — you’ll never need a hint or a walkthrough to complete the game. Just remember that you need to say "talk to ____" instead of "say ___" in order to engage in conversation with another character.
In fact, if you only play one text adventure, ever, make it Photopia.
Motorola intros the ZN200 W396 and W388 mobile handsets
August 15, 2008
Three new low-end mobile phones are being pushed out by Motorola, and all three of differing form factors; the Motorola ZN200, Motorola W396 and Motorola W388.
First up is the Motorola ZN200, a slider mobile with quad-band GSM, EDGE and GPRS connectivity, 2 megapixel camera fixed-focus, 1.9 inch colour display, Bluetooth, USB, FM radio, CrystalTalk technology, and 2GB capacity microSD card slot.

Next the Motorola W396, a clamshell design mobile and has two dual-band GSM versions. The W396 sports a 1.8 TFT colour display, Motorola’s proprietary CrystalTalk technology, GPRS data transfers only, FM radio, USB, and 2GB capacity microSD card slot. The W396 measures 95 x 45 x 17mm with a weight of 88-94grams.

Last but not least we have the Motorola W388 candy-bar and has doen the rounds on the web for quite some time, so the officiall announcement on it isn’t that much of a surprise. Probably the cheapest of them all the W388 packs a1.8 inch colour display, FM radio with RDS, USB, microSD, and twin dual-band GSM versions with only GPRS.

The Motorola ZN200, W396 and W388 become available sometime the end of Q3 and as yet carry no pricing.

Xbox 360 has more developers than other consoles
August 15, 2008
A recent survey conducted by Game Developer Research has reported that there are more developers currently working on xbox 360 projects than on any other console. Whilst I like hearing this kind of thing it’s hard not to wonder how accurate this type of survey actually is.
The results were:
- Xbox 360: 78%
- Playstation 3: 58%
- Nintendo Wii: 42%
What this really means I have no idea? I’ve read previosuly that the PS3 is more difficult to develop for so that 58% of PS3 developers might not be anywhere near as productive as the 78% of 360 developers. Who knows?
New Archos PMPs on the Horizon.
August 14, 2008
Thanks to an unmissable banner posted on the Archos website it appears that the gen 6 Archos line up that we all knew was coming has now been bumped up to “coming soon”. I know this is not news, as I do not believe any of us thought the Gen 6 were not coming but it’s great that they’ve let us know they’re “coming soon”.

Really and truly i’m looking forward to what Archos has to offer. Over the past few years they’ve been introducing the most minor improvements to their PMPs so this year I’m expecting them to come out with a real winner, something that will make me (not a fan of Archos) step back and say “me wants”. I guess we’ll have to hold our breaths for a little longer though.
Thanks Rockinamigo! ![]()

Canon Powershot A590 IS Review
August 14, 2008
Imaging Resource have just reviewed the new Canon Powershot A590 IS - like the A580 it features an 8 megapixel sensor, 4x optical zoom lens, 2.5″ screen, face detection focus, and takes AA batteries - but adds full manual controls, support for optional lens accessories, and optical image stabilisation. The A590 is available for £111 making it the cheapest Canon available with optical image stabilisation.
“The camera performs well in a variety of situations, with fairly good overall responsiveness and timing, producing good quality images, with good exposure and overall color. The availability of a 15-second maximum shutter time and the varying level of manual exposure control are also great bonuses, making the camera much more flexible than many in its price range.”

Canon EOS 450D Rebel XSi DSLR Review
August 14, 2008
ThinkCamera have reviewed the new Canon EOS 450D / Digital Rebel XSi - a 12.2 megapixel update to the 400D - it features 3.5fps shooting, live view shooting, 9 point AF, 3″ screen, SD memory card support, and Canon’s dust reduction system. The 450D Body only is priced at £429, the EOS 450D with 18-55mm IS kit is £449.
“There are one or two minor hiccups; live view arguably being the biggest. The LV system uses contrast-detection autofocus, which is from the ‘accurate, but glacial’ school. It’s perfect for tripod-based still life or macro shots of non-moving things, but it falls way behind the more useful systems found in current Olympus and especially Sony DSLRs.”

Olympus EVOLT E-3 Digital SLR Review
August 14, 2008
Megapixel.net have published their review of the new top of the range E-3 professional Olympus Digital SLR - the camera features a 10 megapixel LiveMOS / Live view sensor, “World’s fastest autofocus”, 5fps sequential shooting with 19 image RAW buffer, built-in image stabiliser, 2.5″ swivel screen, Shadow Adjustment Technology, dust reduction system (Supersonic Wave Filter), Splashproof body and lens system, High sensitivity (ISO 100-3200), and 11 point AF. The E-3 is available for £945.
“The Olympus E-3 takes outstanding photographs indoors as well as out. Its exposure system does an excellent job of analyzing the lighting in a scene and producing arresting photographs. On most occasions, I found the 12-60mm telephoto lens (24-120mm approximate equivalent) very versatile in nabbing the shot that I wanted when I wanted it.”
