EA Showcase 08: Hands-on with Henry Hatsworth in the Puzzling Adventure
August 15, 2008
I saw nearly 30 games at the EA Showcase at EA Studios in Redwood Shores yesterday. After getting hands-on time with, or at least seeing, everything EA had to offer, I came to one simple conclusion: Henry Hatsworth in the Puzzling Adventure was the best game of the show to me.
Wait a second; I actually liked a casual game over something like Mercenaries 2 (which was at the EA Showcase and a preview will be coming) or any of the other hardcore games? Why yes, I actually think Henry Hatsworth is absolutely brilliant. Hit the jump to find out all about this fun little game.
Dungeons and Dragons Online: Mod 8 detailed
August 15, 2008
The biggest gripe for non-traditional players entering into the realm of Dungeons and Dragons Online is how daunting the rule system can be. The statistical frenzy of imaginary rolling dice and character creation has had a habit of turning those players off that may have otherwise enjoyed the diverse universe of DDO. Luckily, Turbine is actively attempting to fix that with their newest mod, “Mod 8.”
Mod 8 has a combination of accessibility for newcomers and has rewards and challenges for those deeply rooted in the game. The goal of the expansion is to make picking up the game as painless as possible, while still showing the player the several layers of strategy and rules involved. I recently spoke to Kate Paiz, Senior Producer at Turbine about Mod 8 and also tried to get her to say that World of Warcraft sucks in comparison.
Hit the break to learn more about the upcoming mod to Dungeons and Dragons Online, as well as Paiz’s integrity when it comes to talking about WoW.
Art Attack Friday: I Am 8-Bit 2008
August 15, 2008
Last night I was lucky enough to be invited to the opening of this year’s I Am 8-Bit art show in good ol’ Hollywood, California. For anyone not familiar with the show, I Am 8-Bit is a compilation of videogame themed art by a variety of artists. What’s most impressive about the show is that a lot of the artists aren’t even gamers. Once you see how detailed and meaningful some of the pieces are, it is hard to believe they were created by people that have never touched a videogame before.
But don’t take my word for it, check out the below gallery to check everything out. But be prepared: I took a lot of pictures. In fact, I think I got a picture of nearly every single piece on display. This may be the biggest gallery Destructoid has ever seen!
In all honesty, though, I couldn’t help myself. The art is absolutely incredible. As I walked around the large gallery, I was endlessly impressed by how creative and varied everything was. From a modern, nude Princess Peach with a P-wing tattoo to an Elevator Action movie poster, all the artwork was just as beautiful as it was wonderfully random.
Luckily I didn’t spend any money, but I was this close to buying a 0 Chrono Trigger painting. I’m not kidding. Hit the jump to see which painting I am talking about and also for a list of my top 5 favorite pieces.
If you live in the L.A. area you have to check out this free (!) show. It runs until September 7. Click here to find out more about it. And if you happen to purchase something really cool, hey, my birthday is coincidentally next month!
Gen Con 2008 in Pictures
August 15, 2008
The last few days have been an awesome adventure for me. I am currently attending Gen Con 2008 in Indianapolis, Indiana. The show is being promoted as the “best four days of gaming,” with the focus being on boardgames and cardgames. Despite those two things being a little out of Destructoid’s style, I am happy to report that several prolific videogame publishers and developers have shown up at the event to demo their product and educate me. Some of the offerings that I got my hands on today include Sacred 2, Champions Online, Dungeons and Dragons Online (Mod 8), Warhammer Online, and King’s Bounty.
Several other games are being shown and expect to see much more information coming in the next few hours and days ahead. As a precursor to my coverage, I thought I would show all of you what happens when I get a showroom all to myself in the wee hours of the morning. Check out the gallery below to see some awesome poster ball-punching, cosplayers, and a preview of some of the booths present at the event.
EA Showcase 08: Hands-on with NERF N-Strike for the Wii
August 15, 2008

NERF N-Strike is easily going to have the best peripheral ever made for a game. You will actually get a real working NERF gun that also doubles as the gun cradle for the Wiimote. There will be a removable one-shot NERF launcher where the Wiimote fits, and the NERF gun is even designed to accept the MotionPlus and allows for the Nunchuk to plug in for easy access.
There will be a story for the single-player mode, designed in a Saturday morning cartoon fashion, where the main character joins an elite NERF group and fights with NERF guns against robots. This is a kids’ game after all, so there won’t be any humans that are yelling out horrible one-liners to shoot at.
The game will support up to four players with around 24 events to play. I played a game with Emily from Ripten where we had to shoot as many balls as we could. Each time we hit a ball, a machine hanging above the stage would paint the ball your team’s colors until all the balls were destroyed.
Players will have access to 25 guns, 12 of which are real NERF guns and 13 of which are brand new NERF guns designed for N-Strike. I played with a handgun, an automatic rifle and a sniper rifle during my playtime.
The game basically feels like Time Crisis, but with NERF guns. The main downside to all of this is that the gun and game package will cost .99, and the gun by itself will go for .99. That’s a great price point for the gun, but no arcade-style on-rails shooter is worth more than . Both the gun and game will be out in your local videogame section and toy section this November 4 for the Wii.
EA Showcase 08: Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning
August 15, 2008
With World of Warcraft becoming so popular and mainstream that people are using the acronym "WoW" more times in everyday conversation than they are the word "wow," it’s about time we got a similar-looking, but "totally different, I swear," MMO.
The game I’m referring to is none other than Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning. We were told that the WAR universe is "all the best bits of fantasy, with all the crap bits taken out."
If WoW is The Beatles, then Warhammer is "the cooler band, the better band … we’re Led Zeppelin." With 800,000 people already signed up to play and 120,000 pre-sales, Mythic Entertainment might be right.
Warhammer: Age of Reckoning is out exclusively for PC on September 18. Hit the jump for more info.
EA Showcase 08: Boogie Superstar
August 15, 2008

Among the slew of titles Electronic Arts decided to show the press at yesterday’s showcase was Boogie Superstar for the Wii, the upcoming girl-centric follow up to last year’s Boogie. The game features dancing, singing, and — let’s be reasonable — is not exactly directed at our demographic.
So it’s a good thing we snuck in with our tween correspondent, 12-year-old Taylor Tiffany. This was her first assignment, and she was not on EA’s guest list, despite the fact the we very clearly RSVPed for her. A bit nervous at first, Taylor really came out of her shell after a couple of drinks and EA presented Boogie Superstar.
Hit the jump for her full report.
